I have come to find that depending on who you talk to and the world view that person holds, there are usually a number of canned responses I keep getting when telling people that I follow the Hebrew scriptures as well as the New Testament. Why is that? The simple answer is that we as a modern western culture have been brainwashed. The programming on television, movies, radio and other mediums have conditioned our minds to have certain rapid responses to certain things that we hear or see.
For example, when I mention to a Christian that I keep the dietary laws and the feast days, his immediate response is that Jesus came to do away with those laws. Now understand, he has never read that anywhere in his Bible. Instead he is regurgitating something he has heard his pastor say and Christian programming say over and over again by way of radio hosts like Hank Hanegraaff or televised sermons of John MacArthur. His brain was washed to produce that immediate response to my acknowledgement of Torah and it cooperates with his flesh as the flesh (or sin nature) desires what is pleasing to the senses. And rest assured, he sure-as-shootin is not about to give up his fleshly desire for bacon!
Now the atheist has a whole other set of canned responses to this issue and Torah in general. You see, most Christians keep at least some of Torah whether they know it or not. They know its wrong to lie and steal or to lust after your neighbors wife. But an atheist has another ball game going in his brain. He thinks the entire universe is just an accident with no real direction or purpose. He does not acknowledge Torah and the instructions contained because he does not acknowledge God in the least sense.
HOLD THAT THOUGHT FOR A MOMENT!
Now, this past week we saw an article hit mainstream news that a Muslim girl committed suicide because she was forced by law to marry her rapist. It’s a horrible story and one that turns the stomach of many people reading the report. The girl would rather die than spend a lifetime with someone who brutally violated her.
What I find interesting is that the first comment at the bottom of the news article reporting this story was the following:
1 – From the bible
Atheist Mike (Guest) 08:23am GMT, 11:23am KSA, 14/03/2012
Deuteronomy 22:23-24: ‘If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.’…. This is why we hate religion.
It seems to me that the canned responses I get from atheist are always along the lines of: “You believe its ok to rape as long as you marry your victim” or my favorite, “You believe its ok to own slaves”.
Anyone can quickly turn to their Bible and see that “MIKE” misquoted Deuteronomy 22. He got that quote from a website called EvilBible that atheist regularly turn to when they need ammo against anyone who claims the slightest belief in God, Jesus, the Bible, etc. The site is full of mistranslated scriptures and because they realize their target audience most likely doesn’t even own a Bible, much less ever be inclined to open one up, they can jumble the verses together anyway they want.
Let’s be clear. The Bible does not condone rape. The verse quoted by “Mike” above is actually a mesh of a number of verses. Here is what the Torah says and I think its pretty reasonable. Unlike the Quran, there is nothing that would force the woman to marry the rapist.
RAPE of a woman
25 But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die. 26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter
CONSENSUAL SEX of unmarried man and woman.
28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
I find the above type comments by christians and atheist entertaining but overly sad at the same time. Its amazing how much we assume while doing almost zero research for ourselves. Most people continue to regurgitate the garbage they hear at their local place of worship whether that place is a Sunday church service pew or a couch in front of a 42 inch television screen.
If we could only be like the Bereans.
