I’m asked sometimes why I refer to Jesus as Yeshua. Today’s Christians only know what they have been taught and many have grown up their whole lives with the understanding of their Messiah with the name of Jesus. They have been praying to and developing a relationship with someone by that name.
It’s very hard for some to understand that someone who they have worked with developing an intimate relationship with has a different name. Its like saying to someone who has been married to their spouse for over 20 years of marriage that their spouse indeed doesn’t have the name they thought they did. That is a hard pill to swallow for some people.
Amid a myriad of translations over the past 2000 years, the name of our Messiah has been lost to many. While I believe its absolutely possible to still develop an intimate relationship with our Savior because of what He did and who He was, getting back to the Hebrew understanding of what His name really means is all the more exhilarating. Yet still, many don’t even want to entertain the idea of our Messiah with the name of Yeshua/Yahoshua which actually translates to Joshua in the English.
I can prove this by comparing the NIV translation to the King James. Let’s look at Acts 7:44.
King James Version
Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
New International Version
Having received the tabernacle, our fathers under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them. It remained in the land until the time of David,
One version says Jesus and the other version says Joshua. Why? Its simple. The context of the verse is Stephen retelling the story of the Israelites being led into the promised land by JOSHUA. But the King James makes a small error and translates it as Jesus because THE NAME IS THE SAME and the original translator of the Textus Receptus goofed because they didn’t know the difference.
It makes sense as Joshua was a type and shadow of the Messiah who led the Father’s chosen people into the promised land just as Yeshua will one day do again!
Yeshua is the Hebrew word for Salvation. Yahoshua/Joshua means “Yah’s salvation” or the “Salvation of Yah”. So it would make sense that the Messiah, our Savior would have this name!
Many including me believe that much of the writings of Jeremiah are prophetic and tell us of the last days. Consider this following verse.
How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to FORGET MY NAME by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my NAME for Baal.
This verse is telling of false teachers who have caused His people to forget His name. In fact, it says they have forgotten His name for Baal. Every year believers (His people) celebrate a non-biblical festival called Christmas which absolutely has its roots in sun-god worship. Baal was the sun-god.
Is it sinking in yet?
The Father gives his children 7 appointed times (Lev. 23) to celebrate during 3 times of the year. And yet today the modern American church has three times and celebrations they currently keep…or at least most do. Christmas, Easter and Halloween. These holidays are steeped in pagan traditions that can all be traced to either Baal worship or the worship of Ishtar/Semirammis who was the wife of Baal.
The contrast is stark! Now what are you going to do about it?
